“How did you get noticed by this university?” the question popped up when a bunch of my friends were celebrating the visiting lectureship party. “They approached me after reviewing my profile on LinkedIn”. This answer surprised all of them because of a weak online headhunting concept in Pakistan. All the professionals sitting there had never thought about the gigantic power of their profiles on LinkedIn.
Headhunting on LinkedIn is on rise worldwide and Pakistan HR professionals also seem struggling to get best out of it. Pakistan ranks at 22 with maximum LinkedIn users worldwide. According to data published by PAS (Pakistan Advertisers’ Society) website, there are 1.975 Million users of LinkedIn in Pakistan and they are rapidly increasing.
Old traditional recruitment tools are still in place. Recruiters use internet websites, personal contacts and existing databases as CV pooling tools. Regular patterned résumés are unable to convince the hiring managers. So, they are forced to rely on personal feedback and referrals. But, this trend is changing gradually towards the latest worldwide practices. One of them is the use of LinkedIn. HR guys regularly post new available jobs. Companies have their own LinkedIn pages with regularly updating the jobs available.
Despite of its recent growth, social media as a professional growth tool hasn’t been explored by most in trade. Some professionals take LinkedIn as just another social medium, use for poking into other profiles while taking least care of their own. This discourages the use of key search parameters in the profiles, which in turn make it difficult for the recruiters to select them. Here are a few tips to make your profile more searchable:
- Use of Professional Keywords: Internet search algorithms work on key word filtration. It is imperative to use relevant key words in your LinkedIn profile. This way, your chances of popup during recruitment search increase.
- Separate CV from LinkedIn Profile: CVs usually have constraint of number of pages that may restrict the complete reflection of your career. Large CVs aren’t preferred much while limitation imposed on content may suppress your work. This isn’t the case with LinkedIn profile. You can easily reflect all the best work you have done in your career. Separating CV from LinkedIn profile and making it briefer is really helpful.
- Ask for Recommendation: Good professionals have always been great contributors in teams. Their work impressions are always on co-workers’ or managers’ minds. You should ask for the relevant recommendations from the teammates you have worked with. This reflects your social appreciation as well as contributions at the work place. Your public LinkedIn profile also mirrors the number of recommendations you have got that leave positive impression on headhunters.
