A true story about a job search in a new country from my work — names and details kept private out of respect.
Many clients come to me for a CV, a resume write-up, or LinkedIn revamping and management. Some come for something they can’t quite name.
A few years ago, a young man contacted me from Australia. He had just moved there alone. The only son of his parents, who were still in Pakistan, watching and waiting.
Australia was new. The job market was unfamiliar. The silence from his applications was deafening.
And he was scared….
He didn’t just share his career details with me. He shared his fear, and it was about a job search in a new country. He cried more than once in our conversations. Not because he was weak. Because he was human, and alone, and the weight of the decision he had made was sitting entirely on his shoulders.
I gave him extra time. Though it was in my service package, but he needed it.
I told him, “This time will pass. And one day you will look back and laugh at how worried you were.”
He got the job.
He’s still in Australia. Married now. Happy. Building the life he crossed an ocean for.
And he still refers clients to me.
I share this not to talk about CVs or LinkedIn profiles or interview calls. I share it because this is what I’ve learned in past years and 1000s of professionals:
The moment someone trusts you with their fear, not just their career, that’s when the real work begins.
And that work has nothing to do with formatting.
If you’re going through your own version of this – a new place, a difficult market, a job search in a new country that’s taking longer than you can explain to the people who love you – know this:
This time will pass. And one day you will laugh at it.
